Veer Movie Review

VeerI awaited Veer eagerly but it is a big disappointment. Most of us thought that after the success of 3 idiots, Veer will the next hit in queue but Salman Khan and even his star power fails to do so. VEER is about a warrior and at the same time, it’s a love story too but the story or should I say the screenplay of Veer is so poor that you really cannot sit through the whole film. Most people who were coming out of the theatres had similar views.

The story goes like this: As the British enslave India with their Divide and Rule policy, kings and nawabs give away their kingdom to the foreigners but for the brave Pindaris, take a oath to fight till their last breath to save their motherland. One such brave and strong Pindaris is Veer which is played by Salman Khan. As Veer takes on the might of the British Empire, he has to fight the King of Madavgarha. He falls in love with princess Yashodhara played by Zarine Khan, daughter of his enemy. The story becomes weak when it shifts to London. The climax is so long drawn that the ending looks absurd. At times the story looks fake that you feel you are living in a world of coincidence! Salman Khan has been credited with ‘storywriter’ but honestly this is where the film lacks. Had the story been tighter, crisper with some tweeking, Veer would have worked! Director Anil Sharma may have made Gadar which is one of the biggest hit of modern times but the fact remains that Veer has appalled the audience who were expecting from the director something better!

Hard core Salman fans may help the movie to recover its exhorbitant costs (100 crores) but on the whole this one is a big disappointment especially after so much time, effort and money has gone into making a period film.

Chance Pe Dance Review

Seems like this movie failed to dance at the box office. Most critics have given it a one or two star rating which goes to show that this one hour 58 minute movie does not work for the audience despite its fresh pairing – Genelia D’Souza and Shahid Kapoor. Chance pe Dance is a story of a struggler who comes to Mumbai from a small town to become an actor. This may remind us of Zoya Akhtar’s Luch by Chance or Ramgopal Varma’s Naach but apart from the concept, the movie in no way bears any resemblance. However, this concept has been repeatedly used in a number of movies and thus one lacks freshness in the subject. Shahid is no doubt really good as far as his acting is concerned but if a film quintessentially lacks in its story then the audience will not be attracted to the movie.

It was said that dance was the main attraction in Chance Pe Dance but the story has so many loose ends that it was difficult to hold on to your attention in spite of Shahid’s moves and groves. There is no doubt to the fact that Shahid is an exceptional dancer and that he has really put in a lot of effort in his performance but Shahid alone too was unable to hold on to the audience’s attention. Genelia was given no importance except for looking good. She no doubt looks good but I wished to see her act. Since Genelia is the support system for Shahid in the movie, the makers could have evolved Genelia into a very strong character! After Kaminey and Dil Bole Hadippa, Chance pe Dance was an important film for Shahid but unfortunately this film has not done well at the box office.

This film tells the story of a talented and passionate guy named Sameer [Shahid Kapoor]. With a positive attitude, Sameer juggles various jobs to keep him afloat while pursuing his one dream to get a break on the big screen. In his quest, Sameer has a lot of ups and down, hopes and disappointments. Sameer fights every hurdle that comes his way because achieving your biggest dream is never easy is what he believes in. In this journey, he is helped by a spirited choreographer Tina [Genelia D’Souza] and eventually, Sameer realizes that sometimes life gives you that one chance.

The problem with Chance Pe Dance is its writing, which is tacky and bland at the same time. In today’s times, when every film-maker is striving so hard to narrate a new story, this film harps on the same-old clichéd, stuff that you’ve watched again and again.

Taare Zameen Par

A mélange of colours, a myriad depiction of emotions, undefining love, magic on reel,  a dream with open eyes, the beauty of reality on reel and so much more. There are so many phrases that define Taare Zameen Par. This is one film that has touched me so beautifully in the recent times. Be it the innocence on Ishaan Awasthi’s face or the humane look on Aamir’s face, this film creates magic on celluloid. It is something that you would not get bored of even if you see it many times.

The film showcases the contrast that a human being lives in. His inner world and the outer world – Ishaan’s inner world is happy and full of imaginations. His outer world is as chaotic and troublesome as it can get. Ishaan gets into trouble every now and then because he fails in his tests and is least interested in studies. Ishaan loves to live in his own sweet world – his world which is full of colours, fishes, dogs, cats, butterflies, crayons and thoughts.

The treatment of the film is what makes it really a visual treat to the eyes. The way Ishaan’s look of the window in his classroom and notices the little sparrow, the way he imagines and adds up numbers, the way he makes his final painting and how the colors are mixing is all what makes this film beautiful. Plus add to that Aamir’s charm and his fantastic approach towards Ishaan. Aamir has perfectly pitched the role of Nikumbh Sir. His each expression is so well defined and so deep. Also, Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma in the role of Ishaan’s mother and father respectively have done a great job.

Taare Zameen par is one of the most successful films in the recent past especially because of its unique story, unique treatment, brilliant narration and wonderful bunch of actors!

Best actor award of 2009?

Many films released in the first half of 2009 but only Ifan Khan in Billu Barber and John Abraham in ‘New York’ managed to pull the audience’s attention. However, in the second half, i.e. from July to December many actors have been appreciated for their respective performances.

Saif Ali Khan was fantastic in Love Aaj Kal. Saif had quite a challenging role in the movie but he performed it beautifully. Imtiaz Ali directed Love Aaj Kal is a film that is super hit at the box office and one of its main reason was Saif who was brilliant in both the roles that he portrayed in the film.

Shahid Kapoor played a double role in Kaminey for the first time in his life and there are no doubts about Shahid’s acting. This was a challenging role for Shahid but he performed it brilliantly and he was outstanding in the film. Some critics believe that this was Shahid’s best performance so far.

He is the super star of the industry – Salman Khan has influenced the viewers so much after ages. His film Wanted has gone to become one of the top three hits at the box office. This film proved to be a boon for Salman Khan who reestablished himself as a super star after this film. Salman has a huge huge fan following and this is one of the reason that even a mediocre story starring Salman has the capability of becoming super hit.

This year has also been special for Ranbir Kapoor. All his films this year have been hit to average. His film Ajab prem ki Ghazab kahani is one of the top three hits at the box office. I believe that one of the strong reasons of this movie being hit apart from its script is Ranbir’s acting. He was superb – spontaneous and sensitive at the same time. He handled his role really well. His performance in Wake up Sid and Rocket Singh Salesman of the year is all appreciated.

And the best actor award in my opinion is deserved by none other than Mr. Amitabh Bachchan who was outstanding in the film Auro has indeed been the child sensation of the year. Auro was one of the biggest challenges for Amitabh Bachchan but the way he has performed his role, just leaves you flabbergasted.

The best actress award of 2009?

In the early half of 2009, a horror film called Raaz – The Mystery Continues’ was released. Here, Kangna played quite an intense role for which she was applauded by many.

This year, Konkana Sen’s two films were released namely, Luck by Chance and Wake up Sid. Konkana is a very powerful actress. Her screen presence is commendable. Even though, Wake up Sid is a film about Sid played by Ranbir Kapoor, Konkana too had an important role to play as she is the influencer in Sid’s life.

Another fantastic year it has been for Katrina Kaif. Her performance in New York was appreciated a lot. She underplayed her part beautifully. Katrina Kaif was also fantabulous in Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani and De Dana Dan. More than anything else, she remains the only actress whose all three films have been super hit this year.

Something changed for Deepika this year after her hit Love Aaj Kal. Deepika not only looked great but also acted quite well!

And this year has also been special for Priyanka Chopra who was superb at her role in Kaminey. But her next film what’s your Raashee was a debacle. However, Priyanka was cast in 12 different roles which was a very demanding proposition and she acted it out beautifully.

This year, Kareena was seen in many films. In Kambakkht Ishq she looked hot and sexy, while in Kurbaan she was in a completely deglamourized role. Even though Kurbaan was a flop, Kareena’s acting is appreciated. Her upcoming film ‘3 idiots’ is yet to be released.

And last which I feel deserves the award is none other than Vidya Balan who played Auro’s mother in Paa. Her subtle nuances, her artistic expressions and her wonderful feminism explored by Balki was mesmerizing. Vidya truly deserves this year’s best actress award for Paa.

Radio preview

Starring Himesh Reshammiya, Shenaz Treasurywala and Sonal Sehgal in lead roles, Radio is a 6 crore film directed by Isshaan Trivedi who has directed 7½ Phere before this.Releasing on 3 December 2009 worldwide, the film has recovered its money through the sale of satellite, video and audio rights.

Himesh Reshammiya plays the protagonist called RJ Vivan Malhotra, Shenaz Treasurywala plays the character of Shanaya Dhingra, Sonal Sehgal plays Pooja and Paresh Rawal too makes a cameo appearance.

Vivan is a successful RJ on a popular radio channel in Mumbai and pretty satisfied he feels he has acquired everything in life but only thing he is unhappy about is his marriage He divorces his wife Pooja due lack of compatibility between the two however, both somewhere still have a soft corner for each other and do not really want the divorce but their hectic life has left them no time to resolute things and establish that spark again.   In short their fast pace life interferes with their feelings.

Shanaya enters Vivan’s life soon but he hardly realizes that she really makes him happy. Vivan discusses about Shanaya with Pooja and soon she realizes that he loves her. She in fact makes Vivan realize that he lover her. However Vivan’s attitude and response towards Shanaya change however he still has a soft spot for Pooja and cares for her but he realises that he wants to spend his life with Shanaya. He is in a fix.

Radio has some really nice tracks. Right from the title track Mann ka Radio to teri meri dosti ka are quite soothing. Himesh has done the music and the lyrics are penned by Subrat Sinha. The music is nice lets hope the film too is received similarly by the audience.
