Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan arrived in the Hindi Film Industry with a bang. He made his debut with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai directed by his father Rakesh Roshan in the year 2000 and movie was a grand success. It has been a remarkable decade for Hrithik where he got to essay all sort of characters with elan and authenticity. He has performed a variety of characters right from a lover boy to a historical character in Jodhaa Akbar. A multi-talented actor, he has kept improving himself one film after another. His dance moves are talk of the country and most of those steps are almost gravity defying. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to admit, his dance moves redefined the word dance in bollywood. Kaho Na Pyaar hai broke many box office records and collected huge number of awards for him.

His real journey began after that when he performed a diverse essay of characters. His acts in Fiza and Mission Kashmir are still talked about where he was more of a performer rather than a star. He also played a supporting role in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum to stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. His choice of roles has truly been amazing. In between he had a mild slump with releases like Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, Na Tum Jano Na Hum, Yaadein, Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage etc but he soon came back with a vengeance with his movie Koi Mil Gaya. It was typically a sci-fi movie that won many awards and huge commercial success as well.

Since then, it has continued to be a purple patch for him where he has chosen his movies very wisely and performed with utmost dedication. His next Lakshya was favoured by one and all. Dhoom-2 took his career to a new high and he clearly overshadowed his colleagues with this movie. His last release was Jodha Akbar and needless to say, it was a huge hit as well. Going by his upcoming projects and selection of themes, Hrithik is sure to enthral us in coming decade as well.

Bollywood Misses of 2009

Looking back at this year, bollywood will not be very happy with its performance. Some of the big budget, big names flopped miserably at the box office. At the same time, some movies came out of nowhere and registered good business. Quite unexpectedly, some movies despite having a nice story and wonderful production failed to excite the audiences. Well, you never know what might work at box office. Talking about some of the misses of the year, bollywood had high expectations from Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone starrer ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ but movie proved to be a damp squib. Akshay was on a roll after the success of Welcome, Singh is Kingg and others but that did not help the cause either.

It was also Akshay Kumar’s first release of the year and needless to say, Chandni Chowk To China was a disaster at the box office. The story had no innovation and humour was quite cheap. Critics thrashed the movie left, right and centre and over-expectation and under-delivery factor sealed its fate

Yash Raj banners poor run at box office continued this year. Dil Bole Haddipa was an eagerly awaited film starring a fresh pair of Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherji who was coming on screen after a long time. Movie is also said to be a copy of Hollywood film ‘She is the man’. Its long since we last saw a clear winner from Yash Raj’s stable.

Ashutosh Gowariker has earned a huge reputation for himself after making some of the best movies in this decade the likes of which include, Lagaan, Swadesh and Jodha-Akbar. Naturally, aam junta and critics alike had pinned high hopes from his latest release ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ but movie bombed at box office. People rejected it out rightly. Viewrs could not handle its length and tiring chemistry of 12 rashees. The absence of crackling chemistry between lead pair of Priyanka Chopra and Harmaan Baweja also didn’t help the cause.

Ranbir Kapoor : The Emerging Star

Bollywood has a penchant of throwing new stars. Apart from new talents who have come from unknown places, there are some star sons also who have proved their mettle. If this decade saw emergence of Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vivek Oberoi then Ranbir Kapoor is not far behind. The lad is on a roll what with his movies earning not only critical success but also commercial success. This year saw his 3 movies, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Wake Up Sid and Rocket Singh doing great business at box office. His acting prowess is also earning appreciation from every quarter. Many film critics are wondering whether next decade is going to be his. Ranbir is doing great service to his surname that has given us wonderful actors across the generations.

Credit goes to Ranbir for selection of his movies. Right from the time when he made his debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sawaria, he had this knack of choosing films of different genre. His next movie, Bachna Ae Haseeno saw him in a role of Casanova wooing three leading ladies. This year 2009, has truly proved to be a milestone for him. Wake Up Sid, a story about a confused youth managed to strike instant chord with youth cine goers. The success of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is entirely of his doing. He single-handedly stole the show. Using his humour, spontaneous acting and quick wit his character Prem had viewers rolling on floors.

His upcoming movies include Anjaana Anjaani and much talked about Rajniti directed by Prakash Jha. Going by the buzz in the town, he is further going to establish his position as new bankable star after these movies. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh must be very proud parents of Ranbir Kapoor.

Produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj, the later has also composed music for the movie. We need not say anything about Vishal Bhardwaj’s ability as he has proven again and again with movies like Kaminey, Maqbool, Omkara and Makdi. However, it will be interesting to watch this movie as it is his production. Ishqiya also boasts of a talented star cast of veteran Naseeruddin Shah, talented Arshad Warsi and beautiful Vidya Balan in the main lead. Movie will be releasing on December 11, 2009.

Movie is set up in the backdrop of eastern Uttar Pradesh (Omkara, Déjà vu?). Movie is an interesting mix of suspense, thriller, chase, romance, deceit and betrayal. While escaping they stumble across a widow Krishna (Vidya Balan) who had some other plans for them.

Babban falls for Krishna whereas Khalujaan is more sensible in his approach. Krishna had her own dubious intentions. But soon reality dawns in and they both realize what has happened. What happens afterwards make for the crux of the story. Movie promises to be interesting because of interesting star cast and Vishal Bhardwaj’s association. Watch it on 11th December.

Comedy movies are back in favor. Most of the recent comedy movies have done quite well on the box office. Examples include, Singh is Kingg, All the Best and recently released De Dana Dan. Rata Gayi Baat Gayi is of same genre. Movie gives us a peek into the modern day marriage. Movie has an ensemble cast of talented actors and coming from Pritish Nandy Communications, movie holds high promises.

The story of the movie revolves around 3 couples. It tracks their lives, fun part and also a twisted short term memory loss. Movie is a modern day take on lives of married couples in urban locations. Movie promises to be a fun riot. It begins with protagonist of the movie waking up one fine morning with a bad hangover and a memory lapse. He is quite convinced that in the last night party he had met a beautiful lady and there was some connection between them but afterwards he remembers nothing else.

Protagonist is married and he seeks to find out what had happened at that night. Whether he went too far or things remained under control he tries to seek help of another married couple but they are having their own issues. In terms of story, we are not expecting to find a story never told before but yes, movie seems to be hilarious with its story line. It also takes a dig at marital infidelity combined with amnesia. Movie will be releasing on December 11, 2009.

Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge

Many upcoming movies are generating curiosity amongst movie buffs. Ajay Devgan who is fresh from his last release ‘All the Best’ is in news for his upcoming venture named ‘Athithi Tum Kab Jaaoge’. There are quite a few gossips about the inspiration of the movie. Some gossip columns talked about movie being a copy of a Hollywood movie whereas some other attributed its story to some other sources. But recently the producer of the movie Kumar Mangat cleared all the confusion in a press conference. He said the movie is inspired from a book.

Well known satirist Late Sharad Joshi had written a short story named Tum Kab Jaoge Atithi and the movie in question is based on the same book. Movie stars Ajay Devgan and Konkana Sen along with Paresh Rawal who is apparently playing the role of Atihti. The team of the movie has yet to release any poster or look of the film. Only the working still of the movie has been released. The movie is co-produced by reputed Hollywood production house Warner Bros Picture India in association with Amita Pathak’s banner Wide Frame Films. Though the poster of the movie does look similar to a Hollywood movie but similarity ends there.

The theme of the movie, as the name suggests is quite humorous and based on a common problem faced by many Indian households, i.e., having guests that never leave. This movie is the first production venture of Amita Pathak and those who don’t know her yet, she is the daughter of Kumar Mangat who has got quite a reputation in films production. The movie will be directed by Ashwin Dhir and will be shot in a flat duration of 50 days in the Yashraj studios. The movie is supposed to release on 26th of February.

Sholay

Indian film industry is known for giving some of the biggest blockbusters in its history. Every era since the time first spoken film ‘Alam Ara’ was released, we have seen dozens of golden and jubilee hits. Stars like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shahrukh Khan, Amir Khan and Hrithik Roshan etc have given us top grosser. But if we have to name just one film that has done astonishing business and is officially considered as the biggest hit and highest gross earner of Bollywood then it must be Sholay. This movie is nothing less than a legend. It is not just a movie; it has become an icon. This movie represents the essence of Hindi cinema. This movie gave a new lease of life to bollywood. It helped in redefining the genre of action movies in Hindi cinema. More than actors, we remember the characters portrayed by the leading actors of the movie. Who can forget names like Thakur, Gabbar Singh, Jai, Veeru, Basanti and even Dhanno? The characters and stars became immortals with this movie.

Sholay was released on August 15, 1975. According to one estimate, Sholay has earned more than $200 million till now. It also has an enviable record of running for more than 5 years in one Mumbai theatre named Minerva. This movie began the culture of hard core action packed movies. Sholay is also the only movie to celebrate Silver Jubilee in over 500 theatres all over the country, at the same time. That’s indeed something to cherish for!

Foreign channels and publications have also hailed this movie. For example, BBC has declared this movie as the ‘Film of the Millennium’ in the year 1999. Movie was directed by Ramesh Sippy and was made in no less than 3 years. Movie starred Amitabh Bacchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics and movie was written by Salim-Javed. Music was composed by legendary RD Burman and movie was shot in Ramanagaram, a small village near Bangalore.

Jai Ho!

We all know how Slumdog Millionaire made history all over the world. This was the movie that also made Indian proud. This movie won India two Oscars and a much awaited one for our Wizard A R Rahman. ‘Jai Ho’ became the buzz word everyone was using. Though this movie was not made in India but its essence was India only. Movie earned critical acclaim as well as huge commercial success. It also won several Oscars and generated media publicity of gigantic proportions. Movie had maximum participation of Indian actors, technicians, and shooting locales. There are several other reasons also that make it a more Indian than a British movie.

The theme and essence of the movie is India based. Based on a novel titled Q&A by an Indian diplomat-cum-part-time writer Vikas Swaroop, Slumdog Millionaire had a co-director on board named Lovleen Tandon who is basically from Delhi. The entire cast of the movie is of india origin. Shot and picturised in different parts of India, movie had maximum number of technicians from India. Rasul Pookutty who won Oscar for sound mixing is from South India. All the songs of the movie are in Hindi. Director Danny Boyle confessed that Movie ps part inspired from Black Friday and Satya.

Slumdog Millionaire had all the typical bollywood masala like songs and dance sequences, drama, action and what not! The famous song and now a part of popular language, Jai Ho had people singing it during Awards ceremonies and even at famous Times Square. This song also has a remixed version sung by Pussycat Dolls and it is in English. Movie has also proved to be hugely beneficial for Indian film industry. Hollywood has started to outsource technical works to bollywood. The star cast of the movie are getting wonderful opportunities in abroad.

The Great Talents of Bollywood

The earlier eras of bollywood are also known as golden era. That period saw emergence and reign of uniquely talented stars in the entire sphere of film industry. Talk about acting, singing, composing or directing, some of the finest ever talents were witnessed during the Black and White Era of Hindi cinema. Think of any name and you are most likely to be astounded by the sheer abundance of the talents. If we talk about acting, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Guru Dutt, Dev Anand etc were the shining jewels of period surrounding India’s independence. Later on, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna etc conquered the hearts of millions Indian movie fans.

Actresses like Waheeda Rahman, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Suraiiya etc still make generations of movie goers nostalgic. Some talents in the field of music were Kishore Kumar, Rafi, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle crooned songs that still tug on our heartstrings. Naushad, S D Burman, R D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Salil Chaudhary composed greatest songs ever written in the history of Indian movies. The works of these geniuses are still admired, appreciated and loved. One cannot really measure the contributions made by these legends.

Though, today film industry has totally commercialized and songs are coming in remixed versions but at the same time we cannot forget most of the hit remixed songs are based on older ones. That is the ode and acknowledgement of charm of ever-lasting Indian music.  We should also remember when directors like Mehboob, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor etc were making movies including Mother India, Pakeezah, Mera Naam Joker, Do Beegha Zameen and Baiju Baawra etc, they did not have the facility of latest equipments. All credit goes to the sheer hard work and imagination of these mavericks. This article aims at dedicating the content to these great talents who made Bollywood what it is today!
